FAQs

What is integrative medicine? Integrative medicine is medicine that takes into account the whole person. Emphasis makes use of all appropriate therapies, including conventional medicine and alternative medicine. Nutrition can be used by medical doctors of various specialties to help treat many different medical conditions. Explore the categories on this website for the scientific evidence. Optimizing the body’s key nutrients has been shown to control, cure, and prevent disease.

What are nutrients? Nutrients can be distinguished among weight loss products because they are extracted from food and water. They are part of our diet and the body depends on them.

Some weight loss products claim to increase metabolism or correct a slow metabolism. This is not what nutrients do. Nutrients aren’t about fast or slow, they ARE metabolism.

When food is digested the nutrients are mined and taken into the body. In the body these nutrients participate in millions of biochemical reactions known collectively as metabolism.

What is metabolism? Metabolism is analogous to the subway grid, the bus route and the street map. Nutrients are the commuters. Any one nutrient undergoing a chemical reaction can be compared to a New Yorker commuting to work:

I’ll take the bus if it comes right away, otherwise I’ll take the subway. If I’m running late, I’ll hail a cab. If it’s raining I’ll go to the other nearby subway station.

The point is that nutrients have many “choices”. They can travel through the human body via the desirable muscle-building, fat-burning route or the undesirable muscle-burning, fat-building route. When the levels of all nutrients are optimal, the body nets a muscle-building, fat burning metabolism.

Are supplements helpful? Nutrition is the most powerful and underutilized tool we have for health. Our nutrition should come foremost from what we eat and what we drink. That said, many of us are low in key nutrients, our health may be damaged as a result and diet alone is no longer sufficient to get back the nutrients the body needs. Many of us are caught in a vicious cycle of missing nutrients and poor health. Several months of strategic use of supplemental nutrients has been demonstrated effective in restoring health to millions of Americans.

Supplemental nutrients are not necessarily safe. Mistakes in dosage, duration and quality have been costly to many taking the “do-it-yourself” approach. I therefore offer patients and clients a list of quality nutrients and dosing recommendations. See Nutrient List.

Is my weight genetic? Your weight is influenced by nutrients, genes, and how the two interact. The science of nutrigenomics has only recently been entered into Webster’s dictionary. Its foundation was laid in the 1950s by investigators such as Linus Pauling and Watson who pioneered what is now being called the age of molecular medicine. While the work is extremely technical, the premise is straightforward. Our phenotype – appearance, personality, intelligence – previously thought to be based entirely on our genes is also shaped by what we eat. Food carries molecular information which “talks to” our genes in unique ways. In other words, if you and your best friend eat the same food it will affect you in different ways.

What diet do you recommend? I do not recommend any one particular diet. Several scientific studies have compared diets and found that each of them can be somewhat helpful. The important thing I want every dieter to know is that only when certain nutrients are at optimal levels can they get the most out of the diet plan of their choice.

Do you recommend surgery for weight loss? Surgery for weight loss is a decision between a doctor and a patient. People who do have surgery or who have had weight reduction surgery should be aware of two things. First, there are at least ten different types of surgery for weight loss. Each effects how the body gets the nutrients it needs. For example, people who have undergone Roux-en-Y surgery generally require certain nutrients in supplemental doses for the rest of their life. Secondly, if weight that was lost after surgery returns, it can suggest low levels of key nutrients and evaluation is important.
